10 Ways to Rock Your Senior Photos Without Feeling Awkward

(Even If You Hate Being in Front of the Camera!)

Hey friend 👋🏼 If you're anything like most seniors I work with, you're probably excited about your senior photos… but also a little nervous about being in front of the camera.

I get it. 🙋🏼‍♀️ Almost everyone worries about feeling awkward or not knowing what to do with their hands (it's a thing, trust me). But here's the good news: this session is about YOU — your personality, your style, your story. My job is to make you feel comfortable and help you shine.

Here are my 10 best tips to help you rock your session like a total pro:

1. Bring Outfits That Feel Like You

The best photos happen when you’re comfortable and confident. Choose outfits that you love and that represent your style.

Go for one dressy look and one casual vibe for variety.

Stick to neutral or earthy tones for timeless shots, but add pops of color if that’s your thing.

Avoid loud patterns and giant logos — they can be distracting.

2. Prep, But Don’t Overthink It

You don’t need to master model poses before your session — I’ll guide you every step of the way! But doing a little prep can make you feel confident:

Try on your outfits ahead of time.

Steam or iron them the night before.

Pack shoes, jewelry, hats, or accessories you love.

3. Bring a Hype Squad

If having a bestie, sibling, or even your mom there helps you relax, bring them along! Sometimes having someone you trust behind the camera cheering you on makes all the difference.

4. Trust the Process

Awkwardness usually fades within the first 10 minutes. I’ll help you loosen up with prompts instead of stiff poses — think walking, twirling, laughing, or tossing your hair. Natural moments > forced smiles every time.

5. Choose Locations That Fit Your Personality

Love open fields? Urban vibes? Farm roads at sunset? We'll pick spots that match your vibe and make your session feel personal. I have a list of favorite hidden gems in Southwest Kansas, but I’m always down to explore new ideas too!

6. Don’t Forget the Details

The little things matter, too:

Clean your nails or choose a subtle polish.

Keep hair ties off your wrist.

Empty your pockets (no phone outlines!).

Bring a lip balm, powder, or comb for quick touch-ups.

7. Play Your Music

Nothing kills nerves faster than your favorite playlist. We can crank it up and turn your session into a mini dance party if that helps you feel more like you.

8. Incorporate Your Story

Bring items that reflect your hobbies, passions, and personality:

Sports gear 🏀

Musical instruments 🎸

Your car 🚗

Cowboy boots 🤠

Your dog 🐶
This makes your photos uniquely yours.

9. Embrace the Candid Moments

Some of the best shots happen in between the “posed” ones — the laugh after a joke, the messy hair flip, the quiet pause. Don’t stress about being perfect; just be present.

10. Have Fun With It

This is your moment to celebrate who you are right now. You only take senior photos once, so lean in, laugh hard, and enjoy it. I promise, you’re going to look amazing.
